JagNation Press Pass: Josh Gattis

(on if he felt the decision to release Donovin Darius was an alarm to the younger guys to be ready to play)
"It is but at the same time it was an awakening to the NFL. It shows you that this league is strictly a business. He is one of the greatest players to play his position especially for the Jaguars organization. He has been around here for a long time. To see someone like that go shows they have faith in the young guys and really puts a load on us. It is some big shoes to fill, but that is why we have to take responsibility and we have to no longer look at ourselves as rookies. We really have to take some responsibility to try and fill his shoes and try to be the playmaker he was."

(on the relationship he had with Donovin Darius)
"He helped me so much. He was a great man on and off the field. I believe after the draft he was the first guy I talked to from this organization other than the coaches. He called every rookie drafted and undrafted just to welcome them to the team. That is the type of guy you want on your team, the kind of guy you want in your locker room leading your team. He has given me so many pointers watching film and on the field. Obviously he was the guy we would go to with any questions and he was always a guy willing to help. You never had to worry about having to ask Donovin a question and him not giving you the answer or showing you the love. I think he cared a lot about this team and his teammates. It's sad to see a player like that go."

(on who he will turn to now for leadership)
"I will definitely have to look to Rashean (Mathis). He's a proven guy, but he's a guy that the cornerbacks often lean to. Donovin was the guy in the safety position. We are going to have to rely on Rashean to step up and be that leader of the overall unit. At the same time, we have to put a load on our backs and come into training camp really prepared and be the leader that Donovin was."
