Jaguars Linked to Jared Gaither?

There has been some rumors and stories that have been linking the Jacksonville Jaguars to former University of Maryland offensive tackle, Jared Gaither, who has made himself eligible for the NFL's supplemental draft. Jagnation talks to NFL draft expert, Tony Pauline about the rumors, and we gauge the Jaguars interest.

JagNation received information yesterday about the Jaguars possibly spending one of their draft picks in 2008 on Maryland offensive tackle, Jared Gaither. Gaither is a huge, 6'9" tackle that played his junior season at 350 lbs., but is currently rumored to be somewhere between 320-330 lbs. Gaither is nimble and athletic, and should be able to run the 40 in the very low 5's. If Gaither has a weakness, it is with upper-body strength, as he is expected to do less than 25 reps on the bench press.

The information that JagNation received claimed that the Jaguars have witnessed Gaither work out already. Under further investigation, Gaither is working out today at the University of Maryland for the very first time, and the only time. The Jaguars have never selected a player in the supplemental draft in their twelve year history, and I can't really imagine they would start now, or at least "win the bid", as there are teams with much more pressing needs on their offensive lines that would likely wager a higher pick on a guy like Gaither. NFL draft expert Tony Pauline said that "considering the Jaguars moves this off-season, he'd be shocked if they wagered any more than a sixth round pick on Gaither."

With the Jaguars already having solid starters at left and right tackle, with Khalif Barnes and Tony Pashos, as well as solid depth with Mo Williams (may not be on the final roster), Dennis Norman, and a project in Richard Collier, it probably doesn't make sense to take on another project who likely won't be ready to contribute in '07. Especially when you consider the value that the Jaguars place on draft picks. To find out more information on Gaither, check out
