The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have parted ways with longtime starting defensive end, Simeon Rice. Rice has had a fantastic career in Tampa and Arizona, accounting for 121 career sacks over 11 NFL seasons. Rice had shoulder surgery last season and played in just eight games for the Bucs. There are conflicting reports about his release, as some say it was due to a failed physical, and many believe it was due to Rice's refusal to take a pay cut from his expected salary of $7.2 million for ‘07. The Bucs have reportedly been trying to clear up cap space to sign first-round pick, Gaines Adams, and possibly free agent quarterback, Daunte Culpepper.
Would Rice help the Jaguars? Maybe. No one knows for sure exactly what he has left, but the Jaguars defensive end rotation is all of the above: injured, old, young, and unproven. I talked to a fellow NFL expert last evening and he believes that Rice can still be a very good situational pass rusher, and he would certainly be an upgrade over Paul Spicer, at least in that category. The Jaguars front office would be doing their fans a disservice if they didn't at least explore the option.
Pass the Rice?
