Jaguars Sign a Speedster

The Jaguars have spent a lot of scouting and financial resources trying to get better in the secondary after a playoff defeat at the hands of New England in which Tom Brady threw more touchdown passes than incompletions. Find out about the speedster signed this week at corner...

As well as signing free agent corner Drayton Florence, the team selected Trae Williams, formerly of the University of South Florida in the fifth-round of the draft on Sunday. Jacksonville has also signed free agent rookie cornerbacks Brian Witherspoon, Michael Grant, and Isaiah Gardner.

Brian Witherspoon measures in at a shade over 5'10" tall, and weighs approximately 175 lbs. The former Stillman college corner is considered a burner as he posted sub 4.3 times in the 40-yard dash.

Among Witherspoon's physical attributes are great athleticism, as referenced by the blazing fast 40-time, he has outstanding recover ability when beat, has explosive burst, fluid hips, great leaping ability, and terrific hands. Witherspoon could be an impressive return man at the next level.

Some of Witherspoon's negatives include the poor level of competition he faced, his lack of strength, tackling abilities, and instincts. In four seasons at Stillman, Witherspoon recorded 73 tackles, 22 passes defensed, and 8 interceptions in 33 games.

Does Witherspoon have a chance to make the Jaguars roster? With the speed that he possesses, anything is possible. He is obviously a raw athlete, but guaranteed roster spots are claimed by Rashean Mathis, Brian Williams, and Drayton Florence. Aside from those three, Scott Starks, Rashod Moulton, Trae Williams, and fellow undrafted free agents Michael Grant and Isaiah Gardner will all by vying for what will likely be one or two spots.
