Jaguars Ink Another Corner

The Jaguars have spent a lot of scouting and financial resources trying to get better in the secondary after a playoff defeat at the hands of Tom Brady, who threw more touchdown passes than incompletions. The Jaguars have signed another corner in order to increase their depth at the position.

In addition to signing free agent corner Drayton Florence, the team selected Trae Williams, formerly of the University of South Florida in the fifth-round of the draft on Sunday. Jacksonville has also signed free agent rookie cornerbacks Brian Witherspoon, Michael Grant, and Isaiah Gardner.

Isaiah Gardner is a former University of Maryland Terrapin that measures in at 5'11", 197 lbs. Gardner is an athletic corner who posted solid workout numbers at his pro day. The former Terp ran the 40 as low as 4.37 seconds, had an outstanding vertical leap of 42.5", did 16 reps on the bench press, posted a broad jump of 11', and ran a three-cone time of 6.99 seconds.

Amongst Gardner's positive attributes include his superior athleticism which allows him to stop the run effectively, he has a great attitude, and a short memory, as most good corners need. Gardner is perfectly fit for a zone defense, which the Jaguars have employed in the past and will likely run in the future.

What kept Gardner from being selected in last weekend's NFL Draft is poor tackling in space, a tendency to fall for fakes and double-moves, and a lack of discipline on the field.

Gardner was a two-year starter at Maryland who posted 69 tackles as a senior and 10 passes defensed. As a junior, he had 63 stops and five passes defensed. Gardner's only injury history included shoulder surgery, which he had in the spring prior to his senior year.

Does Gardner have a chance to make the Jaguars roster? With the speed and size that he possesses, he seems built for the Jaguars system. Guaranteed roster spots are claimed by Rashean Mathis, Brian Williams, and Drayton Florence, and aside from those three, Scott Starks, Rashod Moulton, Trae Williams, and fellow undrafted free agents Michael Grant and Brian Witherspoon will all by vying for what will likely be one or two spots.
