Jaguars Rumor Mill

There's always something brewing in the JagNation Rumor Mill. Are there any more trades in the works? Which players are being groomed for position switches? Where will a few former Jaguars likely begin training camp? Check the mill to see what we're hearing from NFL Insiders, league sources and some of our many contacts around the league.

The Jason Taylor to Jacksonville situation may not be completely dead just yet. With Paul Spicer unhappy about his contract and Reggie Hayward a major question mark due to injury, the team still has some questions to answer at defensive end. JagNation explores the possibility of another Taylor in teal in this article:

Former Jaguars cornerback Terry Cousin is now officially a former Jaguar, as he signed a free agent deal with the Cleveland Browns. The Browns are looking for some depth in the secondary, and Cousin could be able to resurrect his career. For more on the Cousin signing:

There is not one, but two players who could be in for position switches on the Jaguars. Offensively, left guard Vince Manuwai is preparing to make the move over to right guard. Since right guard is the position where teams' normally put their best road-grating run blocker, it seems like a great fit for Manuwai. Maurice Williams, who decided to stay with the Jaguars after testing the free agency waters will likely move over to Manuwai's departed left guard position.

After months of speculation, it appears that cornerback Brian Williams will indeed be moving over to strong safety. The rumors of a move began when the Jaguars were working out corners long before the draft, and the talk was made louder when the team signed former Chargers cornerback Drayton Florence in free agency. Williams will be a bit undersized for the classic strong safety position, but as Jaguars secondary coach Donnie Henderson stated, "He's taken it very well. What it gives us is the flexibility that on certain downs and distances, we don't have to substitute as much. The other thing is we have three corners on the field at all times."

Safety Gerald Sensabaugh will likely be worked out at the nickel corner position as he will be in competition with Scott Starks.

In our last Rumor Mill, we mentioned the camp competition for the third-quarterback position between veteran Todd Bouman and Paul Smith. It appears that Bouman has his eyes on the backup job, and through the first week or so of OTA's, Bouman has displayed a very strong arm and has clearly outplayed Cleo Lemon, who the Jaguars signed to a fairly rich free agent deal that guarantees him $3 million. That could be a situation that needs monitoring.

Other Jaguars players who have made an impact in OTA's have been running back D.D. Terry, defensive tackle Jimmy Kennedy, wide receivers Jerry Porter and Troy Williamson, and rookie defensive end Quentin Groves.

Tony Pashos showed his feisty side again yesterday, tearing off DE James Wyche's helmet in the first blow up of OTA's

WR Clyde Edwards joined the OTA injury list and Jerry Porter is still missing parts of practice with an ankle injury. Reggie Williams and Clint Ingram are also nursing some leg injuries.

We have heard that Byron Leftwich is beginning to garner some interest around the NFL. Leftwich is the former Jaguars first-round pick that was released nine days before the 2007 season opener, after being labeled the teams' starting quarterback months earlier. Reports say that Baltimore has shown some mild interest in Leftwich along with a few other unnamed teams. It is possible that the former Jaguars lightening rod could be in uniform by the start of some teams training camp.

A less heralded former Jaguars quarterback, Lester Ricard was signed by the Carolina Panthers earlier this week. Ricard was released by the Jaguars when they signed undrafted free agent rookie quarterback Paul Smith from Tulsa.
