The Jaguars began the rookie signing process a little slow, as it took them nearly two months to come to terms with their first selection, seventh-round pick Chauncey Washington to a four-year deal. Within the last week, Jacksonville has inked both fifth-round Williams', former USC linebacker Thomas and former USF defensive back Trae, which leaves the team with just two draft picks left, first and second round picks Derrick Harvey and Quentin Groves.
It appears as if the Jaguars are going to get all of their draft picks signed by the start of training camp, as inside league sources have told us that Derrick Harvey and his agent are close to ironing out his deal with the team. It is rumored that Harvey's deal may actually be for less guaranteed money that 2007's eighth-overall pick, Falcons defensive end Jamaal Anderson. It is mutually beneficial to both the Jaguars and Harvey to get the deal worked out prior to training camp, as the Jaguars first-round pick will likely compete for a starting job opposite Paul Spicer at defensive end.
As for second-round pick Quentin Groves, he will likely begin as a situational pass rusher due to his lack of size, but he certainly has the ability to develop into an every downs end in a few years. If Groves can keep up the Jaguars recent tradition of second-round successes, which include Rashean Mathis, Daryl Smith, Greg Jones, Khalif Barnes, Maurice Jones-Drew, and Justin Durant, he may be an immediate contributor to the Jaguars as they hope to find a pass rush, which is seemingly the missing piece in their potential Super Bowl run.
