Jaguars Practice Update 8/6

The Jaguars concluded their open practicing for the public on a very hot, steamy day at the Jacksonville Municipal Stadium practice fields. The sweaty fans in attendance saw a somewhat sluggish workout by the team, where there were plenty of individual and group drills, and some 11 on 11's.

Players who didn't participate were Jeremy Mincey, Troy Williamson, Chad Nkang, George Wrighster, and Brian Williams, along with the three well-known injuries to Brad Meester, Jerry Porter, and Reggie Williams.

Offensively, David Garrard was mostly accurate, as he found his big three targets of Matt Jones, Mike Walker, and Dennis Northcutt. All three receivers showed good hands, and Matt Jones concluded a camp in front of the public which was certainly the best of his career.

In the backfield, Fred Taylor looked quick and nimble, Maurice Jones-Drew showed great hands, and Lavarus Giles continues to display impressive running skills.

Cleo Lemon threw some good passes, and some that weren't so good, but his improvement from mini-camps is evident. Todd Bouman had a tough practice and at this point it would be somewhat of a surprise if he were to make the Jaguars final roster, barring an injury to Garrard or Lemon.

Defensively, Tony McDaniel continued his fine camp, as did Derek Landri in the middle. Drayton Florence had a very good practice session, which included an interception of David Garrard on a throw in which he broke in front of Mike Walker.

Linebacker Daryl Smith was active as usual, and safety Gerald Sensabaugh was all over the field and registered an interception of Todd Bouman. Rookie Trae Williams had a tough day, as he was abused in one-on-one drills by John Broussard and Jeron Harvey.

The Jaguars practice was finished by some sprints as the coaches didn't seem to be pleased by the team's efforts. Saturday evening will be an interesting preseason opener, and we will see if Gregg Williams throws an array of blitzes at the Falcons shoddy offensive line.
