Here's the basic information on Brown from the Jaguars press release: Brown, 28, signed with Carolina as an unrestricted free agent on March 28, 2008 but was released in final cuts on August 30. The 6-5, 330-pound guard has started 43 of his 48 career games while playing with Houston, Arizona and St. Louis. The seventh year veteran was originally drafted by Houston in the sixth round of the supplemental draft on September 27, 2002 out of Florida State. He will wear jersey No. 64.
JagNation asked Sirius NFL Radio host and NFL Expert Howard Balzer to give us a few thoughts on Brown, and he was nice enough to oblige.
Brown was solid last year in a difficult situation, and started games at three different positions. The Rams did bring back several of their linemen, but didn't make much of an effort to keep Brown.
Also, Seahawks.net publisher and Football Outsiders staff writer Doug Farrar pitched in his two cents about Milford Brown.
I didn't really see him with Houston. Not a bad guard with Arizona -- maybe a little below league average. Decent push as a run-blocker, not especially mobile, can be bulled back. Last time I saw him was as a tackle with the Rams last season. Not his position at all (Darryl Tapp just abused him in the game i watched), but that's how desperate the Rams were for bodies in the line with all their injuries. He's an acceptable stopgap.
The Jaguars are desperate for bodies right now on the offensive line with both Vince Manuai and Maurice Williams down, as well as center Brad Meester. Aside from signing Milford Brown, the team also signed former Oakland Raiders tackle Chad Slaughter. To make room for Slaughter, the team waived cornerback Isaiah Gardner. JagNation will have a full scouting report on Slaughter within the next 24 hours.
