Jaguars Waiving the White Flag

It has been reported by Fox that the Jaguars will likely place running backs Fred Taylor and Greg Jones, and wide receiver Jerry Porter on the injured reserve list this week. These moves signify the thought that the Jaguars are going to play out the final three games of this season much as preseason, trying to look at some younger guys who may be able to help them in the future. Details inside...

As the Jaguars will give some different guys real time game reps, they will likely lose their final three contests and be in position to get a top ten draft pick, possibly as high as sixth or seventh overall. There's only one problem with that philosophy—if the team drafts in the top ten, they will have to pay whomever they select a top ten salary, which is something they had an issue with last year when they traded up to select Derrick Harvey, who held out and missed the team's entire training camp.

It has been reported that the Jaguars are looking at bringing in former Jaguar running backs Alvin Pearman and LaBrandon Toefield for workouts. Pearman and Toefield are little more than just guys, so look for Chauncey Washington to get more reps over the next three weeks.

Porter's absence comes along with the suspension of Jaguars leading receiver Matt Jones for the rest of the season. The injury and suspension should give youngsters Mike Walker and Troy Williamson more reps and the team will have a better look at which players should be retained next season.

JAGUARS MAKE ROSTER MOVES

The Jacksonville Jaguars today placed fullback Greg Jones on injured reserve with an ankle injury and signed defensive tackle Attiyah Ellison off of the San Francisco 49ers practice squad to the active roster. Rookie cornerback Isaiah Gardner was activated from the team's practice squad with the roster spot vacated by Matt Jones' suspension, and running back Keon Lattimore was signed to the practice squad.

Ellison, 27, spent the past 14 weeks on the 49ers practice squad after being waived in the preseason. The third-year veteran has spent time with Carolina, Houston, Baltimore and San Francisco before signing with Jacksonville. The 6-3, 318-pounder was originally selected by Carolina in the third round of the 2005 NFL Draft out of Missouri. He will wear jersey No. 99.

Jones started seven of his 12 games this season at fullback and recorded 13 receptions for 116 yards and one touchdown. The fifth-year veteran missed last Sunday's game with his ankle injury ending a streak of 28 straight games played. He has started 34 of his 58 career games for Jacksonville.

Gardner had played in two games for the Jaguars this season primarily on special teams. He originally signed as an undrafted rookie out of Maryland. Lattimore, 24, was a teammate of Gardner at Maryland. The 5-11, 230-pound running back was originally signed by Dallas as an undrafted rookie in May.
