No More Vick, Please

The Jaguars should take a stand on Vick. In the last few days since former Falcons quarterback and current convict Michael Vick was released from incarceration, the email inbox and radio show have been flooded with the thoughts of Michael Vick being signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Although the Jaguars can certainly use some more competition at quarterback, this simply cannot happen for a number of reasons. First off, Vick's actions against animals were so reprehensible that it will alienate a large number of fans, who are already looking for reasons not to buy tickets. Not to mention those who already have tickets.

Another reason that the Jaguars cannot sign this notorious player is because of what happened this offseason. What kind of message does signing a guy like this send to the rest of the team, especially after this year's house cleaning which involved getting rid of seemingly every Jaguar with a questionable past? What kind of message does this send to quarterback David Garrard?

Above everything else, who knows if Michael Vick can still play? He's been away from the game for two years and he was mediocre before he went away. Vick regressed during has last two seasons as a starter and that was against a much weaker NFC. Vick was playing himself out of a job, and there's no way he could've improved over the last two seasons while in jail, even if he was working out.

Some defiant owner of some reckless team will probably give Michael Vick another chance, probably within the next 12 months. Wayne Weaver will likely not be that owner, as he is far too responsible with his actions and his football team.
