If Super Bowl 43 taught us anything, it was that great quarterback play can take you all the way, and that theory was further reinforced by Ben Roethlisberger and Kurt Warner's epic duel. The gambling public is certainly on the same page as Indianapolis is the odds on favorite to win the AFC South, according to gamling911.com. If you were to place a bet on the Peyton Manning and the Colts to win the South, the payout would be +140 (basically, you'd win $1.40 for each $1 you bet).
So what about the big prize? Vegas.com sees the Colts tied for the third-best bet in the league as they are currently 8:1 favorites to hoist the Lombardi Trophy.
The Tennessee Titans, fresh off their 2008 AFC South title in which they finished with a 13-3 record are the next best bet. Although they may have lost Pro Bowl tackle Albert Haynesworth, Tennessee upgraded their offense with the selections of Kenny Britt and Jared Cook in the draft. Add in Nate Washington and the Titans could have a legitimate passing attack to go along with that devastating ground game. According to gambling911.com, a bet on the Titans would pay +250.
So what about the big prize? When betting opened shortly after this year's Super Bowl the Titans were 12:1 odds to win it all. Following free agency and the draft, Tennessee has 10:1 odds, sixth-best in the league.
Last year's last place Jacksonville Jaguars don't have the worst odds to win the AFC South. Apparently, the gambling public believes that quarterback David Garrard can bounce back from a tough year and the offensive line should hold up well with rookies Eugene Monroe and Eben Britton. If you were to wager on the Jags to win their first AFC South title, it would pay +300.
So what about the big prize? When betting first opened, the Jaguars were 30:1 favorites (or underdogs). After free agency and the draft, the team is currently 35:1 odds to finish their season with a celebration in Miami.
Finally, the Houston Texans, despite all their offseason improvements have the worst odds to win the AFC South. Despite the Texans having one of the very best offenses in football, and what is expected to be a very good front seven on defense, a bet on the Texans to win the South would pay +350.
So what about the big prize? The Texans began the betting season as 40:1 odds to take home the Lombardi Trophy, but following a very good draft the team is currently a 30:1 favorite.
