Jags Looking To Get Physical

The Jaguars safety positions were amongst the worst in the NFL a year ago, as Reggie Nelson regressed and the combination of Sean Considine, Anthony Smith and Gerald Alexander were unspectacular at best. Find out which physical safety the Jags have been talking to.

Virginia Tech safety Kam Chancellor is a freak of sorts, as he stands 6'4" and 230 lbs. Chancellor's size is certainly an abnormality at the safety position, as he is a throwback to the big hitting safeties of the past as he routinely struck fear in opposing receivers during his time at Tech.

"I'm physical, I'm a leader, I show people that I can do things and people follow me," Chancellor said when asked about what he brings to an NFL team. "I bring another dimension. I'm a 6'4" safety with some great range. It something pretty rare and I can bring that to the league."

Chancellor was the star of stars at the safety position during the East-West Shrine Game practices, as he was quick to the football and was surprisingly good in the one-on-one drills.

"I think I performed pretty well," Chancellor told JagNation. "Only two passes caught on me during one-on-ones all week. I think I performed well during one-on-ones. I showed a lot of physical standpoints, communicating, hustling, getting to the ball. I think I performed pretty well."

Chancellor's big week drew the attention of Jaguars general manager Gene Smith who the Virginia Tech safety got an interview with. Smith was impressed with his work at safety but also mentioned a possible position switch.

"I talked to the Jaguars, and most teams including them talked to me about linebacker," according to Chancellor.

Although he'd prefer to stay at safety, Chancellor is certainly open to the position switch.

"A lot of teams told me that they want to try me out at outside linebacker or linebacker, which I don't mind. The change is something I'd have to adapt to in my career."

The only real knock on Chancellor is his lack of speed, as he's expected to run somewhere around a 4.6 40-yard dash. Still, Chancellor has great instincts and range and he could be selected somewhere in the middle rounds.
