Jaguars Ink Kampman

On Saturday morning was the first to break the news that defensive end Aaron Kampman was in Jacksonville meeting with the Jaguars brass. Kampman agreed to terms late Saturday night, the terms of the deal are not yet known.

According to Michael Wright of the Florida Times Union, veteran defensive end Aaron Kampman agreed to terms late Saturday night. The terms of the deal are not yet known, but it is believed to be similar to the contract that new Lions defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch received. The Vanden Bosch deal is reportedly a 4 year $26 million dollar deal, of which should be the framework for the Kampman deal. Aaron Kampman is also coming off of a torn ACL he suffered last November, so one would assume the contract signed with the Jaguars is either backloaded or has playtime and sack incentives.

The Jaguars were one of the worst teams at getting to the passer last year with only 14 sacks on the season. Kampman produced only 3.5 sacks last season, but he was playing out of position in the Packers new 3-4 look defense. Prior to last year, Kampman had 27 sacks the previous 3 seasons in the Packers 4-3 defense, which it looks like will be the Jaguars base defense with the addition of Kampman.

Some will speculate this signing is showing a disappointment with second year defensive end Derrick Harvey, when it is quite the opposite. Harvey is not the force off the edge at the right in spot the Jaguars were looking for, but he fits the mold of a left defensive end perfectly. Harvey does get pressure off the right side, but with the addition of Kampman it potentially adds another player who can get pressure along with Harvey, which is what was missing last season.

Kampman played his college football at the University of Iowa and was a fifth round selection of the Green Bay Packers in the 2002 NFL draft. He spent all 8 seasons prior with the Green Bay Packers. Kampman also attended the same high school as current Jaguars center Brad Meester, Aplington-Parkersburg High School.
