Garrard Improves in Jaguars Loss
"It was good to see," Del Rio said of the team's first scoring drive. "David (Garrard) went down and made some nice plays. Mike Sims-Walker showed up and made a couple big plays for us. It was good to get that start for our offense."
After sputtering in their first possession, the Jaguars first-string offense drove the length of the field and scored their first points of the preseason. Garrard and company put together a 10-play, 78-yard drive that used 6:15 off the clock as the Jaguars quarterback found Mike Sims-Walker on a pair of tosses that encompassed 57 yards.
"We know he has good ability but he is a young player," Del Rio said of Mike Sims-Walker. "This isn't a 10-time Pro Bowler. This is a good solid player that needs to play, needs to show grit and toughness and determination and I thought for him to come out and start the way he did tonight, got some good work and then we got him out, I thought that was good for him and good for our team."
Saturday night, we may have seen the best David Garrard has to offer. Garrard connected on six of his eight pass attempts for 79 yards and a touchdown before heading to the sideline after getting the wind knocked out of him. A definite improvement after last week's debacle.
"I think it's all about taking your opportunity to improve and get better with your next chance out there and that's what we did today and I feel like we did make improvements," Del Rio stated.
The 78-yard drive was exactly what the Jaguars coaches and fans wanted to see, but you must keep everything in perspective. There were some missed plays down the field by the quarterback and some inaccuracy throwing the football kept the team from making a few more plays.
It's great that the offense showed some signs of life, but they did have two three-and-outs in just three possessions. David Garrard will get an extended look at a pretty mediocre Tampa Bay defense next Saturday, as teams customarily play their starters for three full quarters in the third preseason game.
