Jets sign placekicker Doug Brien

The New York Jets announced today they have signed unrestricted free agent kicker Doug Brien.

Brien, a 6-0, 180-pound kicker, began last season with the Minnesota Vikings before being released on October 23.  He entered the league in 1994 with the San Francisco 49ers, Brien, helped the 49ers win Super Bowl XXIX against San Diego.  He tied a Super Bowl record by making all seven extra points he attempted in the game.  That season he also set the 49ers record for extra points made (60) and attempts (62).

Brien has been a vagabond the last two seasons, kicking briefly for Indianapolis, Tampa Bay and MInnesota. During his brief stints with these three teams, he made 10 of 12 field goals.

Brien's two years of frequent travel followed a successful five-year stint in New Orleans from 1996-2000. During that time, his percentages each season were solid making 84, 85, 91, 83 and 80 percent  of his field goals in those five seasons.
