A conversation with Chad Pennington
Q) Are you fired up to get back to work with the conditioning program starting?
Pennington: It's exciting because you get to see all the guys again. All the guys are back after being out of town or being back home. It gives you a sense of energy and urgency.
Q) Do you got back to Knoxville during the break or do you live in New York year round?
Pennington: I'm here year round. I think it's important to stay in one play. It varies from guy-to-guy, but for me it worked out much better last year for me to stay here with this being my home base, so I can workout at the complex year round.
Q) How much time did you take off after the final game before you got back to work?
Pennington: Two weeks totally off. Once February rolled away, I started a three-day a week program, including a shoulder program. I started with a low intensity program and gradually increased the intensity.
Q) Did you go on vacation?
Pennington: I went on Barbados for a week. That is when all the chaos started and all my boys started to leave me.
Q) We know you took your playbook on your honeymoon. Did you take any work to Barbados with you?
Pennington: No coaching changes, so I didn't have to take the playbook.
Q) Are you starting to work on chemistry with your receivers, especially your knew one - Curtis Conway?
Pennington: As we progress through training camp and the offseason, it will get better. I'm not playing for August and September, I'm working with these guys for December and January. That is when we need to be on all cylinders. As long as we can find ways to win early, the goal is to be smoking on all cylinders in December and January. That is the goal.
Q) Have you had a chance to work with Curtis Conway?
Pennington: He has so many things going through his mind trying to get settled. We will have our chance. What I like about is that he's a guy who wants to win. He is going to be a good addition for us and help take us to the next level.
Q) Are you helping your friend Byron Leftwich (Marshall quarterback) prepare for the draft?
Pennington: We have been talking a lot. We have the same agent. He is going through the same training program I went through for The Combine and before the draft. He got his weight down. I heard he did a great job doing interviews at The Combine. We talk on a weekly basis. He is such a competitor. He is do eager. He's tired of the waiting period.
Q) Mel Kiper said you are actually more mobile than him.
Pennington: I don't know if that is a good thing or not (he laughs). Actually, we are similar. It doesn't look like he's moving. He deceptive because he's so big at 6-6, 240. He had more rushing yards than Carson Palmer. I think he's a 4.8 guy who will have enough mobility. But he's definitely a pocket passer, there is no doubt about it. He wants to sit in there and make the big throw.
Q) One receiver people don't talk too much about is Jon Carter. What can you tell us about him?
Pennington: He's blazing fast. The first thing you know about him is that he can run. In this offense, that is beneficial because of all the shallow crosses where separation is so important. That is going to be to his benefit.
Q) What are your thoughts on Tory Woodbury at the receiver position?
Pennington: I'm interested to watch Tory and learn him as a receiver because the last two years he's been going back and forth between quarterback and receiver. Because of that, he hasn't had a chance to focus on one or the other. That didn't allow him to get better. With him being a receiver now, I think he's got an unlimited amount of potential. Is he inexperienced and young? Absolutely, but at the same time with his hands and athletic ability and size he can help us out. No doubt: in the red zone. I think he will be fine.
