The 6'4, 315 lb defensive lineman out of Temple is largely being hailed among the best selections in the draft, a pick made out of necessity given the team's depth issues along their line but also a top-tiered talent projected to contribute immediately Wilkerson is a big body but isn't just a space eater at either end position or at tackle
Wilkerson joins a Jets defense ranked among the best in the NFL over the past two seasons under head coach Rex Ryan
"That's a tremendous defense that they have over there and I'm glad to be a part of it," Wilkerson said "I think I can come in and help the defense be even more destructive than it is "
Wilkerson, a lightly recruited prospect out of New Jersey when he went to Temple out of high school, represents the second straight year that the Jets selected a player grown in the Garden State with their first round pick While he wasn't a Jets fan growing up – "I didn't grow up a Jets fan, but right now I am a Jet" – Wilkerson acknowledges that there will be a big transition to the NFL from the college ranks He is confident that his versatility will make itself known with his new team
"I can move along the line - play any position [along] defensive line," Wilkerson said "That's a credit to Temple playing in a 4-3 and a 3-4 It helped me out and I can fit in with whatever they need to be done at any position "
