Ground and pound lifts Jets past Jaguars

The Jets are right in the thick of the AFC playoff hunt thanks to their Week 14 win over the Jaguars.

Instead of a bounce back game from New York Jets' embattled quarterback Mark Sanchez, the running game stole the show on Sunday in Jacksonville. Gang Green's backfield duo of Shonn Greene and Bilal Powell combined for 155 yards on 39 carries including two rushing touchdowns. With Sanchez under center the Jets' passing attack showed no sign of life as the offense was held scoreless at halftime for the fourth time this year.

New York's coaching staff took the ball out of Sanchez's hands and fed Jacksonville a steady diet of ground and pound offense in the second half. The Jets enjoyed their most prolific rushing performance since tallying 252 rushing yards against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 6.

Powell reached career-highs in rushing attempts and rushing yards and for the fourth straight game tallied a touchdown. While the Jets' ground game is surging of late, Sanchez did very little to make his case as the franchise's signal-caller; finishing the day 12 of 19 for just 114 yards and zero touchdowns.

Sanchez committed his 20th turnover of the season, fumbling in the second quarter after a hit delivered by Jaguars' defensive end Jason Babin. New York overcame yet another sub-par outing from Sanchez who failed to score a touchdown for the fourth time this season. Rex Ryan's defensive unit carried the day and after holding the Arizona Cardinals to 0 for 15 on third downs last week, Gang Green limited Jacksonville to just 2 for 16 in third down efficiency.

The Jets kept a glimmer of playoff hope alive with a win Sunday as they now find themselves just one-game back of the final Wildcard spot in the AFC playoff picture. While the Jets pursue an unlikely playoff berth, they'll need better play from their struggling quarterback if they aim to remain in contention down the stretch of the regular season.

Gang Green travels to the Music City to take on Chris Johnson and the Tennessee Titans next week on Monday Night Football.
