New Dog, Old Tricks

With Tim Tebow and Darrelle Revis rumored to be on their way out of New York, is newly hired general manager John Idzik ready to clean house or just playing head games with two of his highest profile players?

The Jets are back to their same old tricks, this time with quarterback Tim Tebow. After countless reports indicating that New York was trying to release or trade Tebow, general manager John Idzik came out with a quote that sang a different tune.

"Tim, as you know, is currently on our roster," Idzik said. "What we're doing is we're trying to increase competition at [quarterback], so we're going to let the competition play out. We're going to see who we're able to bring on board and let it play out this offseason and into training camp. So, I think that'll be healthy for all concerned, including Tim."

The quote was taken from a conference call that Idzik had with Jets season ticket holders on Monday. The change in voice from what league sources were saying perplexed many analysts and fans.

The bold choice of words could be a clever use of media spinning from Idzik. In his brief time manning the Jets' ship, we have witnessed a general manager that is no stranger to increasing a player's trade value and this might be the latest ploy by Idzik to do just that.

It's been well documented the amount of interest cornerback Darrelle Revis has garnered from other teams, but the legitimacy of some of the teams listed in various reports has been dismissed by simple salary calculations and team source denial.

Whether Idzik truly is looking for Tebow to provide some competition at the quarterback position for 2013 remains to be seen, but don't be surprised if this was used to give Tebow a boost in trade value, as we're already seeing with the Revis situation.
