Jets cut Braylon Edwards and Joe McKnight

Wide receiver Braylon Edwards and running back Joe McKnight were handed their walking papers on Monday.

There's a new sheriff in town and first year general manager John Idzik has his fingerprints all over the New York Jets 2013 roster.

A fan favorite and one of Mark Sanchez's top receiving targets, Braylon Edwards was released from the team on Monday. Edwards was a key cog in the Jets consecutive runs to AFC championship game berths during the 2009 and 2010 seasons, but failed to land atop New York's crowded wide receiver depth chart this year.

Santonio Holmes returned to practice on Monday for the first time since undergoing surgery to repair his LisFranc injury, while Clyde Gates, Jeremy Kerley, Ryan Spadola, Zach Rogers and Ben Obomanu have all leapfrogged Edwards for playing time this preseason. The Jets signed Edwards just before the start of 2013 training camp and he vowed he would show the coaching staff that he can still play at an elite level.

Gang Green also announced they have parted ways with running back Joe McKnight who had a laundry list of on and off the field issues during his tenure with the team. The fourth-year tailback failed his conditioning test during training camp; citing dehydration and possible ‘anxiety' issues as a likely cause for failure. McKnight later suffered a head injury that forced him to miss practice time after experiencing migraines and headaches stemming from the hit.

McKnight was also arrested for outstanding traffic violations just outside the team's training facility; creating more headaches for himself and the organization. One of the NFL's top kick returners during 2011 and 2012, McKnight fell out of favor in New York after refusing to talk to reporters about his ‘concussion-like symptoms' and engaging in a war of words on Twitter with several Jets' fans.

In addition to Edwards and McKnight the Jets released: WR Joe Collins, DB Donnie Fletcher, G Patrick Ford OL Trey Gilleo. S Bret Lockett, G Stephen Peterman, LB Sean Progar-Jackson, P Ryan Quigley, WR Marcus Rucker, LS Patrick Scales, RB Chad Spann, WR K.J. Stroud, WR Rahsaan Vaughn to cut their roster down to 75 players.
