Jets' Notes and Nuggets: Week 5 Edition

The Jets went into the Georgia Dome and came out victorious for after an embarrassing loss last week to the Titans. The Jets combined a balanced rushing and passing attack to exploit the banged up Falcons' defense and did so with great results. Find out the game notes, nuggets and career milestones from the Jets third win of the season

The New York Jets took out the Atlanta Flacons on Monday night with a 30-28 victory on a game-winning field goal by Nick Folk. Rookie quarterback Geno Smith led the Jets 55-yards downfield for his second game-winning drive of his career.

Smith played his best game of the season, throwing for 199 yards with three touchdowns and zero interceptions. It was his first game without a turnover and a passer rating above 100 and the strong game of Smith and the offense could have been attributed to a few of the additions the Jets had during the week. Mike Goodson returned to the field for his first action of the season, rookie guard Brian Winters made his first start in place of Vladamir Ducasse, and David Nelson made a couple of catches in his season debut with the team.

The Jets' victory at the Georgia Dome was the first in franchise history and it was the first time they've won in Atlanta since 1986.

The Jets fast start was lit by safety Antonio Allen who blocked a punt on the Falcons' first drive of the game. That gave the Jets the ball at the Falcons' 45-yard line and they would capitalize with a 22-yard field goal by Folk. It was the first time the Jets had scored on the opening drive all season.

The Jets defense stifled the Falcons running game, limiting them to 69 yards rushing on a combined 22 carries. The defensive line caused constant destruction and was led by the young combination of Muhammad Wilkerson and Sheldon Richardson. Wilkerson would end the night with a strip sack on Matt Ryan, seven total tackles, and two tackles for loss. Richardson chipped in with five tackles, one sack, two tackles for loss and one pass defensed.

The Falcons made the game interesting, though. After the Jets took a 27-14 lead on a 1-yard Kellen Winslow touchdown catch with 12 minutes left in the 4th quarter the Falcons stormed back with a vengeance. Matt Ryan would throw for 122 yards on the next two drives, leading the Falcons to two touchdowns and the lead with just under two minutes remaining in the game. Julio Jones and Tony Gonzalez were huge weapons, amassing a combined 197 yards on the night.

Smith's four straight completions and Bilal Powell's run would set up the 43-yard field goal for Folk. He now has hit his first eleven field goals of the season and now has two game-winners on the season.
