The New York Jets are in the midst of a rebuild. Since John Idzik became the general manager of the team last offseason, fans have seen numerous changes both in team culture and in player personnel. With the NFL draft approaching in just a few months, Idzik will have more opportunities to continue adding players that lead the team in a winning direction.
The team proved that even with the loss of Darrelle Revis, the defense could still be an intimidating force. Now the Jets need to fill in their holes on the offensive side of the ball. The 2014 draft class features a lot of great talent at the wide receiver position. With a mid-round pick, Gang Green has a great opportunity to draft Marquise Lee out of USC to compliment Smith and provide him with a dynamic weapon.
The unanimous All-American Trojan has already shown the capability of being a difference maker. Making the team as a true freshman, Lee finished his first year of collegiate football with over 1,000 receiving yards and found the end zone 11 times. Not wanting to chalk it up to beginners luck, Lee outdid his freshman totals his second year at USC by recording 118 catches for 1,721 yards and 14 scores. Throughout the season, Lee broke numerous Pac-12 records, including receiving yards in a game with 345 yards against Arizona. His outstanding sophomore campaign saw Lee win the Biletnikoff Award as the nation's top receiver.
Lee would make an ideal fit for the Jets due to his speed, agility, and true athletic ability. Lee is capable of shedding tacklers and turning a routine slant route into a footrace to the end zone. Fans will be able to see all his amazing talent in person at the combine and see why Lee will become one of the best receivers in the NFL after a few years of experience. His athleticism is a great compliment to Smith as now the Jets would have a legitimate downfield threat. Demanding extra attention whenever he will be on the field, Lee's presence will make it easier for Smith to scramble for yards should he choose to run an option. With Santonio Holmes due to depart this offseason, Lee would make a great replacement and prove to become a fan favorite.
