Scouting the Jets: Jacoby Ford

Following three lackluster seasons with the Oakland Raiders, Jacoby Ford has become the newest wide receiver addition to the Jets roster. Scout's experts break down the flashy return man's game from top to bottom.

As a dual athlete running track and playing football for Clemson University, Ford drew a lot of attention for his blistering speed. With a 4.28 40-yard dash time, he was ranked 7th out of 310 wide receiver prospects prior to the 2010 NFL Draft. Regarded as one of the fastest players in the league, Ford made more of an impact as a kick returner rather than a wideout. In addition to his speed, Ford showed great hands and route running ability in his NFL rookie season, frequently making plays even in double coverage.

At just 5-foot-9 and 190 pounds, Ford lacks the size and strength that is prevalent in so many star wideouts across the NFL such as Calvin Johnson and Dez Bryant. Not to say that he can't become a No. 1 receiver down the line; just take a look at DeSean Jackson weighing in at 175 pounds. However Ford has turned out to be extremely injury prone, missing 28 games in his last 3 seasons due to everything including foot, knee, and hip injuries.

Career Highlight

Drafted in the fourth round in 2010 by the Oakland Raiders, Ford had his breakout game during Week 9 versus their bitter rivals, the Kansas City Chiefs. In addition to 148 receiving yards and a kickoff returned for a touchdown, Ford pulled in a 47 yard reception to set up the game winning field goal in overtime. Ford was named Rookie of the Week for his performance.

Potential: B

In a struggling offense that was ranked No. 31 in passing yards at the end of the last season, any additional wide receiver talent for the Jets is a plus. With the addition of ex-Bronco star Eric Decker, who has a much more physical style of play, Ford's speed provides some good depth for Geno Smith or Michael Vick to work with. At only 26 years of age, Ford's talent is undeniable, and he could potentially have a breakout season for his new team. With Vick also on the Jets roster, it's going to be crucial this year for Ford to develop good chemistry with his new quarterbacks.
