Colon close to returning, still day to day

After undergoing a knee scope last month, offensive lineman Willie Colon was able to participate in individual drills, but wants to take things day by day to avoid any possible setback.

Jets' guard Willie Colon is inching closer to returning, but the veteran says he is taking it day by day.

<“I’m good, for the first day,” noted the Jets’ offensive lineman. “Just trying to get acclimated to football and all (the) things I need to do next to be efficient.”

Colon says his main focus is to avoid any setbacks, and says so far so good.

“Each day is a progression,” said Colon. “Right now (I’m) just taking it slow. Trying not to have any setbacks. That’s the key right now.”

The rugged lineman says despite the injury, his conditioning has not suffered notably.

“I didn’t feel bad at all,” admitted Colon. “It’s different when you’re in there (for) a longer (time), you’re doing more reps. I have yet to do that so I can’t really grade where I am, but (individual drills) went well. It felt good. Like I said it’s about me going out there, being efficient, and trying to get into the swing of things.”

As for the offense as a whole, Colon says they must perform the basics well, but sees great potential.

“I always have high expectations,” said Colon. “I feel like if we’re on our game, we’re doing what we need to do, we’re efficient as far as managing the ball, no turnovers, and being better on first and second down. I think we weren’t that good last year with that. If we’re good on first and second down so we don’t have to make third down such a mission, I think the sky is the limit for this offense.”

Ultimately, Colon says ultimately his injury has been difficult, but he is eager to rejoin the Jets’ veteran offensive line.

“It’s been a mental grind. But its football, I’ve been doing it, I’ve been dealing with it, said Colon. “I think I was just more eager to get out there with Nick (Mangold) and obviously having Breno (Giacomini) here, I kind of wanted to get going with him, because chemistry is huge for the offensive line. So I just have been really eager about that. Right now it’s time and I am ready to go.”
