After much speculation, veteran NFL coach Chan Gailey was hired today by the Jets as their new offensive coordinator.
The move comes after several days of negotiations. Upon the hiring of former Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles last week, it was reported by almost all NFL insiders that former Dallas and Buffalo head coach Chan Gailey would be hired by Bowles as the his offensive coordinator. When several days went by without a hire there were reports that both sides were at an impasse despite the 63 year old Gailey being out of football since he was fired by the Bills as their head coach two seasons ago.
In the end, as the Jets prepare for a press conference tomorrow to officially announce hiring of Bowles and General Manager Mike Maccagnan, they will also officially announce that Gailey is on board..
Despite Gailey's limited success as a head coach, he is highly regarded as a formidable offensive coordinator and will bring some veteran help to the inexperienced head coach Bowles. Gailey replaces Marty Mornhinweg who ran the offense for the Jets the past two seasons.
