Powell was criminally underused last year, lost in the shuffle of the three-headed running back rotation with Ivory and Chris Johnson. With Johnson gone the Jets needed to make sure they got a good backup for Ivory and this move does exactly that.
Powell is shiftier than given credit for, has good balance and vision and is very good in the passing game. Powell has been the Jets best pass protector for years now and he’s also a good receiver out of the backfield. Powell isn’t exceptional at anything but he is solid to good in every aspect of being a running back.
Details of the contract have not been made official yet but it certainly won’t be anything that would prevent them from making any other moves. Signing Powell doesn’t necessarily rule out the possibility that the Jets will add another running back whether in free agency or the draft. It does however make it far less likely that the Jets continue their pursuit of Spiller or Vereen. Both will likely be too expensive to add as a third running back.
Because this move is re-signing their own players we don’t have to wait until free agency officially opens up at 4 pm ET today. The deal is official now. We will update you with contract information when it becomes available as well as any other moves the team makes.
