Breakdown: Jets select Deon Simon in the 7th

Without a pick in the 6th round the Jets added more depth to an already loaded defensive line by drafting Northwestern State DT Deon Simon with the 223rd pick.

Draft Guru Tony Pauline of our sister site filed this scouting report on Simon recently:

Full Name: Deon Simon

School: Northwestern State

Ht: 6-4.5 Wt: 321 40: 5.09 Year: 4Sr

Bio: Two-year starter awarded all-conference honors as a senior after totaling 26 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss and 1 sack in seven games. Missed time during the season with an MCL sprain.

Pos: Massive and explosive interior lineman who takes up a lot of space. Plays with leverage and fires off the snap. Keeps his feet moving, holds his ground and is impossible to move off the point. Displays a good change of direction with the ability to slide down the line laterally. Uses his hands well and can dominate opponents.

Neg: Not a natural pass rusher or playmaker. Possesses just a short burst of speed and lumbers around the field. Should be more productive than he is.

Analysis: Simon is an imposing figure who can dominate the line of scrimmage when focused on his game. He offers possibilities at nose tackle but must polish his game and consistently play at a high level.
