Ryan Fitzpatrick trimmed his beard in hopes of growing mojo back

Ryan Fitzpatrick had a glorious beard, now it's just a beard

FLORHAM PARK, NJ - Ryan Fitzpatrick was all prepared for the first question from reporters to be about his freshly trimmed beard. In fact he was disappointed he had to wait until the fifth question because he had a whole bit worked out in his head.

"I thought that was going to be the first question," Fitzpatrick joked. "I was ready for a softball right away. It seemed like it was time to switch up the mojo a little bit. I was going to make a funny joke about Rex Ryan but I'm not going to."

But the New York media wasn't about to let him get away with that. You can't just drop that you had a whole bit about Rex Ryan with this group of reporters and expect them to let it go.

Before the Jets played the Bills Rex Ryan said about Fitzpatrick, "Right now, the thing that's disappointing me is that beard. He's not a real handsome kid." Of course Fitzpatrick had a perfect response at the time saying, "That's alright. I got five kids, so something's working." And when you have material like that the New York press isn't going to let you skate on not telling them the new material you had prepared.

"Okay, I will. This was what I was going to open with," Fitzpatrick said. "Well, after the last few games, I decided that I just need to look in the mirror and figure out what I can do better and when I looked in the mirror, I realized Rex was correct, and I was pretty ugly and I think this is a better look for me right now."

While that was clearly a joke, as they say, there's truth in jest. One of the common themes in the locker room yesterday was about everyone looking at themself in the mirror and getting back to basics.

"I think everybody just has to be on the same page, we just have to get honed in on what we are trying to accomplish, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday as we're practicing and really communicating and getting everything down with each other," Fitzpatrick said. "Sometimes we try to make the game a little too complicated, and so we just have to be able to go out there and play and execute.

"It's one of those things that is frustrating because I think that we have a lot of the right people in here. We have worked well as a unit at times and we haven't at others, so we just have to continue to practice and try to continue to keep the confidence level high and go make some plays and all that stuff. We definitely have to get off to faster starts because that really hurt us the last few weeks."

Ryan Fitzpatrick getting back to basics by trimming his glorious beard into an average and boring beard and trying to make the offense less complicated all in an attempt to recapture that #FitzMagic that had Jets fans so giddy about when they were 4-1.
