ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting that the Jets have agreed to a deal with Matt Forte. "Matt Forte is signing with the NY Jets, per source," Schefter said on Twitter. Not even 24 hours after watching Chris Ivory sign for around $6 million per year with Jacksonville Mike Maccagnan has not only found Ivory's replacement but has acyually upgraded the position.
We will have to wait to see the details of the contract before deciding how good of a move this is by the Jets but Forte was the best running back on the market, the only thing working against him is that pesky age thing. We all know the history of what happens to running backs after they have hit 30 and Forte is indeed 30-years-old but he is still a very good and productive running back.
As good as Forte is as a runner he is even better in the passing game. Chan Gailey will have a lot of fun utilizing Forte's skill as a receiver out of the backfield and Forte can still get the job done on the ground. Multiple eariler reports had the Jets still trying to negotiate with Bilal Powell but we will see if the Jets move away from that considering Powell is a poor man's version of Forte. Forte is a three-down back and is excellent in pass protection, he does everything well but once again he is over the age of 30.
Forte will join his ex-teammate Brandon Marshall in the Jets Green and White and should help make life a lot easier for whoever the Jets quarterback ends up being next year. We'll see if this signing is enough to hold you rabid fans over for at least a couple of hours.
