The Jets found a do-everything-great running back in Matt Forte and now they have re-signed their own do-everything-good running back Bilal Powell. Powell is basically Forte light, both backs are effective in all three phases of the game.
Forte will be the lead back but Powell can spell Forte as needed and the offense won't have to change a thing. Usually teams opt for two different styles of backs in their one-two-punch but there's no shame in repeating skillsets when those skillsets include everything.
We saw last year that the Jets offense was at it's best when Powell was getting a lot of snaps, now they get to retain Powell and also get a premium version of him to work with.
With Powell as the backup opposing defenses will lean slightly towards defending the against the pass when he is in there and will have no better than a 50/50 guess when Forte is in there. On top of these two signings Albert Breer of the NFL Network is reporting the Jets have also signed former Saints running back Khiry Robinson. With the Jets unsure of who their quarterback will be next year it seems they are determined to have an excellent stable of running backs to work with.
