We've been waiting on the Jets to announce that they have either released D'Brickashaw Ferguson or restructured his contract, but we might have just got our first real hint about what the team plans to do with him. The Jets are hosting left tackle Kelvin Beachum in for a visit and if they sign him it could very well mean Ferguson is on the way out.
Beachum is coming off of an ACL injury in his last year with the Steelers and if healthy would serve as an upgrade over the declining 32-year-old Ferguson. Of course it's possible that the Jets could try to sell Beachum on playing tackle, which would mean releasing Breno Giacomini, but Beachum reportedly only wants to play left tackle. The Jets could try and convince Ferguson to move to right tackle, and take a pay cut, but they won't be able to his his decline skills any better over on that side.
With the Jets interested in Beachum the best bet is the intend to play him at left tackle and look to upgrade at right tackle through the draft. With or without Beachum the Jets will certainly try to upgrade the right tackle position but the addition of Beachum would bolster the left side of the line and serve as another upgrade for the team.
Jets fans might not be thrilled with the idea of releasing Ferguson, who has had an exceptional career as a Jet, but at 32-years-old with his play slipping dramatically over the past few seasons and $14.1 million cap hit the Jets have to, at the very least, restructure the contract to bring that number down and if they can find an upgrade over Ferguson then it makes sense to just move on all together from the former All-Pro tackle.
