The Jets need linebackers, they need inside linebackers and outside linebackers. They need a pass rusher to pair with Lorenzo Mauldin on the outside but they also need an outside linebacker who is stout against the run. Ravens outside linebacker Courtney Upshaw brings nothing as a pass rusher but he would help replace Calvin Pace in defending the run.
Upshaw was a big name coming out of Alabama when the Ravens drafted him with the 35th overall pick in the 2012 draft. At the time many Jets fans were hoping the Jets would take him but that was strictly because of the pedigree of Alabama players. Some people thought Upshaw could be an effective edge rusher but watching his career at Alabama it was pretty evident that Upshaw could defend against the run and that's about it and his time in Baltimore only solidified that reality.
It's not the impact move for a pass rusher that Jets fans are hoping for but with the Jets lack of cap space and a very limited pool of edge rushers in this free agent class the Jets were always going to have to look to the draft to acquire that edge rusher. The good news is there are plenty of those in the draft and one would think the Jets definitely grab at least one in the draft, it's just a question of which one and which round. But if the Jets do sign Upshaw he can certainly help the defense in a limited role against the running game and you can be sure the Jets know they'll need to find someone else to rush the passer.
