Nutten quits the team/Thomas still hurting

Veteran guard Tom Nutten quit the team. It has been a very frustrating camp for the right guard. He was battling a hyper-extended elbow, and while he was out, he lost his starting.job . . .<p>

The Jets held their morning practice on their grass field this morning, but that wasn't by design. For some reason, there was a crane on the regular practice (Field Turf). Edwards was livid at this, but didn't want to take the time to have the crane removed because they were on a tight schedule, so he just moved the proceeding to grass.

"That is why the coach was a little irritated," said Edwards.

He was also irritated with his team. In the middle of the practice, he called the team together for a huddle to read them the riot act. He usually only calls the team together at the end of practice . . .

The Jets problems the Jets linebackers have covering the tight ends continues to be an issue. At the Thursday morning practice. Mo Lewis was beat by rookie tight end Gabe Reid down the middle of the field . . .

While Brent Smith looks like the odds-on favorite to win the starting right guard job, he's clearly a work in progress.

"He has a lot to learn," said Herman Edwards.

But one thing the coaches love about him is his toughness . . .

While Edwards is saying that Jonathan Goodwin has a shot to win the right guard job, he is clearly a long-shot. The Jets actually are teaching Goodwin to play center this summer to increase his versatility as a backup . . .

Chester McGlockton didn't look particularly agile in the morning practice. On one play, he lost his footing and would up on his stomach. The Jets have to keep their fingers crossed on this McGlockton gamble. Right now, he looks like he might have lost something, or his poor condition is preventing him from being himself.

He is going to play 10-12 plays against New Orleans.

The coaches are going to start working him at nose tackle some next week, so he will have the versatility to backup at both interior line positions . . .

Edwards thinks the transition from Richie Anderson to Jerald Sowell at fullback is going to be seamless. "Jerald played a lot last year (at fullback)," said Edwards. "Most people don't know, he played 35-40 percent of the time." . . .

Doug Brien has placed calls to other kickers who played in the Meadowlands to get a feel for how the tricky winds blow . . .

Bryan Thomas is practicing with a wrap on his right ankle and he's got a noticeable limp in his gait when he runs. He might be back practicing, but he clearly is still hurting . . .

The Jets front office feels they are getting a bum rap on new $50 charge to people on their season-ticket mailing list.

One front office official pointed out today that eight other teams in the league do the same thing . . .
