FLORHAM PARK, NJ - It lasted five months but the Jets-Ryan Fitzpatrick staring contest has finally ended.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported early this evening that Fitzpatrick came to terms with the Jets this afternoon to a one year $12MM deal and will be at practice tomorrow.
The Jets a few months ago showed no interest in a one year deal but obviously softened their stance as of late. The QB wanted a multi-year deal in the Sam Bradford $15MM per year range which the Jets were not willing to do. The Jets offered a 3 year deal worth $24MM with $15MM guaranteed but it wasn't enough for FItzpatrick. This deal lets the QB cash in big again next year if he matches the season he had last year. Based on his history of erratic success it will be interesting to see if the veteran can do it.
Schefter also mentioned that Fitzpatrick's deal also included incentives that could escalate the deal another $3MM.
We will have more information on this story as it becomes available and video of Fitzpatrick tomorrow.
