"I think he has done a phenomenal job," said Wayne Chrebet. "He is a big kid. I know they are looking for a "big" receiver, and he's shown a lot of toughness catching in traffic in the preseason. I think he can fill a void that we have on this team."
Lewis was the Vikings fourth round pick in 2001. He battled injuries during his two years in Minnesota. When he was healthy, he was one of their kick returners last year. He has good size (6-1, 197) and speed . . .
The Jets released kicker Danny Kight. The only way he was going to make the team was as a kickoff artist, and when one of his kickoffs landed on the 21 yard line against New Orleans, he kind of sealed his fate. The Jets wanted him to show the ability to kick the ball into the end zone, and he didn't do that this summer . . .
Curtis Martin was very active in practice on Monday. It was the most touches he had all summer and he looked excellent. Expect to see quite a bit of him this Saturday against the Giants . . .
Chester McGlockton continues to not look that nimble or agile in practice. He is playing very high. He was knocked to the ground early in the afternoon practice way too easy. He is probably still in the 350 area and his ideal playing weight is around 330. McGlockton, at this stage of his career, is clearly better suited for a system where the defensive tackles job is to tie up offensive lineman so others can make plays. To expect him to be a playmaker at the three-technique is probably asking him too much . . .
Marvin Jones will likely be out a couple of weeks with the pulled hamstring. It will be interesting to see how his replacement Kelvin Moses does. Last week, when Moses went into the game for Jones, he didn't have a particularly good game. He gave up the six-yard touchdown to tight end Boo Williams and a 23-yard completion down the seam to tight end Ernie Conwell. He was credited with no tackles . . .
Vinny Testaverde has played one series thus far in the preseason and only practiced once a day in two-a-days. You have to wonder if he is getting enough work. "It's not like he needs a bunch of reps," said Herman Edwards.
Not all football people might not agree with this. Some will tell you that Testaverde is a quarterback who needs a lot of reps to be successful . . .
After that excellent performance against Tampa Bay in Tokyo, Victor Hobson has leveled off some . . .
With Derek Pagel out for a while with an ankle sprain, you have to wonder if Victor Green's phone might ring. Even if Pagel comes back fast, the Jets might call Green. Remember Pagel was having an inconsistent camp before the injury. He was thinking instead of reacting which is understandable for a rookie safety . . .
