Jets Waive Nine

New York City - The New York Jets announced today they have waived linebacker Vince Alexander, running backs Sean Bennett, Chad Brinker and Ian Smart, defensive end Lance Gibson, offensive tackle Isaac Herring, wide receivers Tavon Mason and Michael Oliva, and tight end Dallas Neil.

Alexander signed with the Jets as a rookie free agent from the University of Pennsylvania on May 2, 2003. The 6-1, 210-pound linebacker made eight tackles (four solo) in addition to four special teams stops in four games for the Jets this preseason. Bennett signed with the Jets as a free agent on April 1, 2003. The fourth-year, 6-1, 230-pound running back from Northwestern University had two carries for four yards and made four tackles on special teams in four preseason games for the Jets. Brinker signed with the Club on May 2, 2003 as a rookie free agent from Ohio University. The 5-10, 205-pound running back carried the ball eight times for 10 yards and two touchdowns and returned one kickoff for 15 yards in four preseason games for the Jets. Gibson signed with the Club as a rookie free agent from the University of Central Washington on May 5, 2003. The 6-5, 248-pound defensive end registered four tackles (two solo) for the Jets this preseason. Herring, a 6-5, 303-pound offensive tackle signed with the Jets as a rookie free agent from Brigham Young University on August 13, 2003. The Mapleton, Utah native played in one game for the Jets this preseason. Mason originally signed with the Jets as a rookie free agent from the University of Virginia on April 26, 2002. The 5-11, 180-pound wide receiver was waived at the end of last season's training camp and re-signed with the Club on January 17, 2003. Neil signed with the Jets as a free agent on June 25, 2003. The 6-1, 235-pound punter/tight end, in his third season from the University of Montana, punted once for 53 yards this preseason. Oliva signed with the Jets as a rookie free agent from the University of California at Davis on May 5, 2003. The 5-11, 199-pound wide receiver played in four preseason games for the Club. Smart signed with the Jets as a rookie free agent from C.W. Post on May 5, 2003. The 5-8, 185-pound running back/kick returner gained 34 yards on 13 carries and averaged 23.0 yards on three kickoff returns this preseason. The Jets' active roster currently stands at 71 players, meeting league requirements limiting rosters to 65 players plus allowing exemptions for players allocated to NFL Europe. The Jets travel to Philadelphia to play the Eagles on Thursday, August 28 in their preseason finale. The final 53-man roster for the regular season must be set by 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 31.
