Florham Park, NJ - If you haven't heard by now Geno Smith will be the starting quarterback against the Ravens on Sunday, with Ryan Fitzpatrick headed to the bench, but while this news will obviously dominate today's news cycle it wasn't the only news to emerge from Jets headquarters today.
1) Devin Smith and Breno Giacomini both returned to practice today and will slowly be worked back into doing more. Todd Bowles did not provide a timetable for when either will be able to play again other than to say that it won't be this week.
Other Jets injury news, Muhammad Wilkerson (ankle), Darron Lee(ankle), Brent Qvale (neck), Buster Skrine (not injury related), Ryan Clady and Nick Mangold all did not participate in practice today. Bowles said it was just a sore ankle for Wilkerson, Lee had an MRI and was determined to have just a "normal ankle sprain."
2) Bowles said that the quarterback change won't be the only lineup change he makes this week, he will also be making changes to the defense though he basically told the media that we'll have to wait until Sunday to see what those changes are. Taking a guess though and that could mean just about anyone in the secondary but the biggest change has to be how they use Sheldon Richardson, they simply have to stop using him as a linebacker even though he continues to be a good soldier and put forth an extraordinary effort. But you could easily make a case that he is the best player on the Jets defense and playing him out of position and asking him to do things that don't maximize that talent simply because he's versatile is a bad and misguided strategy.
3) Joe Flacco did not practice for the Ravens with a shoulder injury. The Ravens still expect him to play, and said he doesn't need to practice at all (especially considering they are playing against the Jets secondary, now they didn't say that part but we all know they're thinking it to themselves) this week to be able to play. If Flacco can't play this week the Jets would face Ryan Mallett which would obviously improve Smith's chances of getting a win in his first game back as a starter.
