The Jets waived J.P. Machado on Sunday and then re-signed him. Machado is a decent player, but not worth his contract figure of about $1 million he was scheduled to earn. The Jets brought him back at a reduced salary . . .
It was very surprising the Jets didn't bring Gabe Reid back to the practice squad. The tight end had an excellent camp and looks like a potential starting quality player. He is a big, fast athletic tight end. We hear the Raiders are interested . . .
The two most intriguing players on the Jets practice squad are linebacker Mark Brown and offensive guard Brandon Moore. Both have excellent potential and look like future contributors to the Jets. Ted Cottrell is a huge fan of Brown who has very good instincts and is a big-time hitter . . . Vinny Testaverde had an excellent practice on Monday. One real nice pass was a slant to Curtis Conway, who continues to do a solid job. "Curtis Conway is going exceptionally well," said Curtis Martin . . .
While Marvin Jones is not on the injury report, he is still wearing a wrap on his right hamstring . . .
Herman Edwards is getting fed-up with all the questions about the four ex-Jets on the Redskins. "We aren't playing four guys, we are playing the Washington Redskins," said Edwards . . .
The Jets should be able to exploit the middle of the Redskins offensive line where they could be communication problems. They might be forced to start backup guard Lennie Friedman, for the injured Larry Moore, at center, playing alongside two new guards . . .
The Redskins will enter this game with just two quarterbacks - Patrick Ramsey and Rob Johnson - on the roster. They are taking a huge risk. If those two players go down, they will have to use wide receiver Rod Gardner at quarterback. Gardner last played quarterback on the scout team as a freshman at Clemson . . .
John Madden and his Maddencruiser were at Jets camp on Tuesday . . .
Laveranues Coles is avoiding the Washington media this week. He had Ramsey get his playbook out of his locker to avoid reporters on Sunday. But before Coles stopped talking, he had maybe the best quote anybody has spoken about the Jets-Redskins Thursday tilt.
"If it was left up to me, we would never have played this game," said Coles. "If we win, then everyone will want to say the Jets made a bad decision (letting four free agents go to Washington). If the Redskins lose, they'll say it's good the Jets let them go because they were no good anyway. To be honest, if I could have it my way, it wouldn't go down like this. This way, nobody gets embarrassed by the situation."
