Another injury of note is starting defensive tackle Jermaine Haley, who is suffering from a sprained ankle. The Redskins are loaded with issues at defensive tackle. They lost starter Brandon Noble for the season with a three torn knee ligaments. Last year's starters, Darryl Gardner and Dan Wilkinson, are no longer with the team for salary cap reasons. Now the hobbling Haley is going to start alongside career backup Bernard Holsey. So expect the Jets to try and run up the middle . . .
While it's unlikely he would sign with them, the Jets do have some interest in safety Lawyer Milloy, who was released by the Patriots today. While Herman Edwards feels Milloy will be too expensive, the team is still going to look into the situation. It's no secret they could use safety depth. At this stage of his career, Milloy is considered very good against the run, but a liability against the pass . . .
After practice, Pennington was the first player into the weight room. He worked on the stairmaster . . .
Safeties Sam Garnes and Jon McGraw both practiced very well this week. They look like they are going to be a good combination. The ten pounds Garnes lost in the off-season, seems to have helped his mobility significantly. When you combine that with McGraw's 4.5 speed, the Jets will have a lot better speed at the safety position this year . . .
Edwards instituted a number of things this off-season to help the team get off to a better start. In both his seasons as coach, the Jets have gotten off to bad starts. "I think the things we implemented in the off-season should help," said Edwards. Edwards changed the team's off-season conditioning program and added to the meeting schedule.
