Jets Sign QB Blackwell; Martin Waived

The New York Jets announced today they have signed free agent quarterback Marquel Blackwell and waived quarterback Jamie Martin.<p>

Blackwell was waived on August 30, 2003 after signing with the Club as a rookie free agent on May 2, 2003. The 5-11, 207-pound quarterback out of the University of South Florida completed 11-of-18 pass attempts for 154 yards with two touchdowns in three games this preseason.

Martin, a 6-2, 205-pound quarterback is an eight-year NFL veteran who signed with the Jets on August 26, 2003. The Weber State University product has played in 25 career games, making three starts, and has completed 199-of-310 passes for 2,141 yards, throwing for 14 touchdowns with 13 interceptions.

While this move might come as a surprise to many, anyone that watched practice this week, isn't shocked by this decision. Martin looked terrible. He threw a myriad of picks and displayed a very weak arm.

Martin wasn't with a team this off-season after being waived by the Rams, and his rust showed.

The Jets have decided that Brooks Bollinger is going to be their #2 quarterback, and feel Blackwell is good enough to handle the #3 job.
