Hall of Famer Kevin Greene hired as New York Jets outside linebacker coach

Jets hire Hall of Fame sack machine Kevin Greene as outside linebackers coach

On Sunday, the New York Jets announced they hired Hall of Fame linebacker and Schenectady, New York native Kevin Greene to be outside linebackers coach. Greene replaces Mark Collins, who served as outside linebackers coach for two years before being let go by Todd Bowles this offseason.

The five-time Pro Bowler and three-time first-team All-Pro spent five seasons with the Green Bay Packers as outside linebackers coach from 2009 to 2013. Greene won a Super Bowl with the 2011 Packers. He resigned from the position after the 2013 season to spend more time with family and until his sons finished high school.

Green was inducted into the Hall of Fame in August after finishing his 15-year playing career third on the all-time sacks list with 160. He played with the Los Angeles RamsPittsburgh SteelersCarolina Panthers and San Francisco 49ers

As a player, Greene also won NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1996, was a two-time NFL sacks leader and was named to the NFL 1990s All-Decade Team.

Bringing in a Hall of Famer has to ignite the young linebacker core - a unit that struggled to get going in the 2016 regular season. Lorenzo Mauldin took to twitter once the Jets announced the news.

Mauldin had 16 combined tackles in 11 games this past season. He added 2.5 sacks and one interception in 2016.

Mike Catapano got in on the celebration as well.
