From a fan's perspective

Say it with me people: J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS!!!

Let me introduce myself. I'm a 21 year old man who's been a Jets fan practically all my life. I've been through a lot of things in life, lots of rough times, tons of great times, and lots of classic memories. I grew up with the NFL too, I use to be fascinated by guys like Joe Montana, John Elway, Phil Simms, Lawrence Taylor; I always wanted to grow up and have their mentalities and attitudes in every facet of life. It was only really about three years ago that I decided to give my 100% allegiance to the Jets, vowing they'd be the only team I'd support, cheer for, and be a diehard fan of. During these three years, I've had the pleasure of meeting lots of Jets fans, friends who I talk to pretty much every day, people I even talk to on the phone on a daily basis. I met even more people when I decided to do my own Jets WebSite & Newsletter , these are my hobbies that I hold close to my heart. Now I'm faced with one of those rough times in life.

It seems everywhere I go, everything I read, and people I talk to, everyone has to make it a point to say lots of harsh things about my team. Saying things like we're done, the Jets are a waste of a team, that we should fire everybody on their Coaching Staff, etc. It makes me sick to my stomach to see these people, who I thought were Jets Fans, all of a sudden turn their backs on this team. A team with over four decades of football, have had NFL legends like Joe Namath and Don Maynard on its roster, historic games, and precious memories. I really hate how people just lose hope, yeah, I know things are really bad now, but it's not the end of the world nor our season. I know lots of people consider the Jets to be a huge part of their life, and it's like that with me too. I do get sad and annoyed when this team loses, but it's one thing to be mad at that and another thing to start wishing bad things on Coaches, Offensive Coordinators, and even players.

We've been here once before you know. All I need to do is mention a few things and you know what I mean: 1-15? Kotite? AFC Championship Game? Yeah, I mention these things and you know the heartache Jets Fan suffer, but you know what? I wouldn't have it any other way, it takes a lot of heart, passion, and team spirit to stick it out with your team through thick and thin. It's even more magnified when it comes to the players, they have it much worst than we, as fans, do. They‘re the ones who have to deal with the media, fans who yell obscenities and wish for them to get injured, and all the constant pressure because they're winless after just four games. Four games that we were able to win, but couldn't come through when it mattered most. We have no running game, our O-line can't open up the holes we need to get Curtis Martin to be what he's capable of being, and we can't seem to stop the run. All of these are problems we need to fix, and in life, everyone has problems. It doesn't matter who you are or what you do, you're going to have problems whether you accept it or not. How you go about getting through them is what gives you character. The Jets in the past have shown they have what it takes to get out of this hole.

Here comes my point, we, as fans, need to support our Jets! Maybe I'm different, maybe I'm use to having things not go my way, but one of the things that has given me the character that I've developed, is that no matter what, it's best not to give up. If you give up, you might as well just not bother anymore or even try to better the situation. Everyone seems to hope Coach Edwards gets fired, how would you like it if he just lost hope, gave up, and resigned? Nope, not like him or his character, he's sticking with this team and confident we'll get out of this slump. If you can't stick with a team you grew up with, a team that makes you happy because of its players, history , or tradition, and a team that is carrying the banner of the NEW YORK Jets, then maybe it's not good to still be one of us. All I know is, when these Jets come out of the gate against the Buffalo Bills after their BYE week, it's going to feel really sweet to start winning games again and going on a hot streak. I believe in this team, and I know Coach Edwards is going to make whatever necessary changes to get the best possible team on the field.

The one thing I clearly see that some fans are missing is HOPE. If you believe in this team and hope for the best, you'd be surprised how things are better and how you react with both wins and losses. Yeah, we've lost four straight games, but we were in them all. Had a few plays gone our way or in our favor, maybe the outcome would have been different. The thing is though, we still have plenty of games left to play this season, we need to shape up now as fans and support this team. I couldn't believe it when I read that Jets Fans BOOED the Jets at the end of the halftime this past Sunday, perhaps if we were cheering for them and giving them encouragement that if we were still in the game, so were they, they would have come out playing with more passion. You can't do well if those around you (In this case, 70,000+ fans) don't even support or believe in you. I've always believed that fans play a very important part when it comes to teams, you support them, you cheer for them, you applaud them, they play for you and they play off your energy. They want to make you proud, they want to be able to say they have the best fans in the world, who never gave up on them .. So lets act like it but most of all, lets act as fans of one of NEW YORK's sports teams, we're not called "The Big Apple" because we sell apples, we're called it because we're the city that NEVER sleeps or gives up and we're loyal sports fans. Look at Mets Fans, I have quite a few friends who STILL support their Mets, if they can support them, we sure as heck can support our team. Say it with me people: J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS!!!
