What would an optimistic guy like me say to that? Same thing "The Kid," Chad Pennington would say; just take it a week at a time. In a parity filled NFL era, anything can happen. I'm not going to say either we'll make the Playoffs or we won't. All I'm saying is that I'm just worrying about the Buffalo Bills for now.
If you only knew how much admiration I have for Chad Pennington; the guy is unreal. All he does is play to the very best of his capabilities and week in and week out, he's defines enthusiasm. The way he throws, the way he handles himself on and off the field, the guy lives and breathes football and is a natural born leader. And this makes me believe that we have ourselves a franchise quarterback. But not just any kind of franchise quarterback. Pennington is a guy who will lead us to the big game. Maybe not this year, but watch out, because either next year or the year after, Pennington is only going to keep getting better and better, and so will his team.
The best thing I love about the situation the Jets are in is that with "The Kid" at the helm, you never know what to expect. For example, the previous week, the Jets had to struggle with a not-so-good football team in the Jacksonville Jaguars. Don't get me wrong, I respect the Jaguars since they WILL be a good team in the future. But when we played them, they weren't good statistically-wise, yet we almost lost to them. We had to come back in the end just to seal it, and we did. Now fast forward to this past Monday Night, here we are, facing a 9-2 Tennessee Titans team, a VERY good football team at that, and we beat them 24-17. Even though they lost by a just a touchdown, we played a heck of a game against them, and on national TV as well! We were good on offense, defense, and even special teams. We played incredible football.
Welcome to being a Jets Fan. I guess to sum it all up of what it's like in a phrase would be: "Expect the unexpected." It's funny when I say that because I'll never forget when Chad Pennington was actually drafted to the Jets. You see, many people, even Chad himself, honestly believed he was going to be selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers! Chad and his wife were actually looking for houses in the Pittsburgh area. But when it came down to it, the Jets grabbed him. I remember it very well because when they called his name, Chad told the media afterwards that the first thing that came to his mind was, "They have no idea who they just picked, they're going to be in for a shock." Ever since then, I always believed in due time, he'd be a pretty good quarterback. However, I'll admit, I never thought he'd be THIS good. Heck, lots of people thought he was too analytical, you know, thinking too much about the simple things of football, and that he didn't have a cannon for an arm or whatever. Now look at him, he's starting to get better and better with every game and he has yet to officially start a season.
I don't know what the future holds this season for the New York Jets. As you all know, things get complicated with how the Playoffs are set up towards the end of December, but I do know this team will never give up. They'll play every game as if it's their last and for that, I'll always root for the Gang Green. Plus with "The Kid" at the helm, I have a very funny feeling that each and every one of us will truly witness the unexpected one of these days.
