Whispers

The waiving of Windrell Hayes wasn't a big surprise.

The waiving of Windrell Hayes wasn't a big suprise. He's a nonfactor on special teams, and that was a big disappointment to the Jets. When he was picked, the Jets figured with his size and toughness, he could do a good job running down on kicks. It didn't happen. He wasn't a good enough receiver to keep around as a #4 or #5 wideout without him contributing on special teams. Also Craig Yeast is a good backup receiver, and he has turned into an excellent return man for the Jets . . .

Don't expect guard Randy Thomas to play this Sunday in New Orleans because his sprained ankle is very severe. J.P. Machado will start for Thomas. Machado is a smart player, but there is a big dropoff anthletically from Thomas to Machado. Thomas has much better speed and quickness.

The Thomas injury could really hurt the Jets running game. The Saints have two excellent defensive tackles in La'roi Glover and Norman Hand, and they will present Machado with quite a challenge . . . Shane Burton has been upgraded this week to questionable with a calf strain. Last week he was doubtful . . . Expect Chad Morton to return this week against his former team. Morton has missed the last three games with an ankle sprain. The kickoff return tandem of Yeast and Morton should give the Jets good field position. They will also go back on punts together.
