Thursday Whispers

Herman Edwards is clearly upset with the media for portraying his team as a weak 4-3 team. He has taken repeated shots at reporters this week about their portrayal of the team. It has become a rally cry for the club this week . . . Chad Morton looked great in practice this week and will return to action against the Saints this Sunday. He missed the last three games with an ankle sprain. The Jets will use Morton on punt returns and he will join Craig Yeast on kickoff returns. The Jets coaches think Morton is a better punt returner than Yeast . . .

Wayne Chrebet is feeling great and has been a big part of the Jets offense in practice this week. Chrebet, who has just 15 catches on the season, is an integral of the game plan this week. With teams now worrying about Laveranues Coles, Chrebet should have more room to work with. Teams can't double-team Chrebet as much as they used to . . . Right guard Randy Thomas will not play this week and will be replaced by J.P. Machado. This could hurt the Jets against the Saints excellent defensive line that is clearly one of the best in football. Panther's cornerback Jimmy Hitchcock told JC he thinks the Jets can run against the Saints .

.. . The Jets have been stressing tackling this week in practice. They no that if they tackle like they did in most games this year, Saints TB Ricky Williams will go wild . . . The Jets get a break this week because Saints All-Pro left tackle Willie Roaf will miss the game with a knee injury. Roaf will be replaced by Daryl Terrell, who joined the Saints a couple of years ago as an undrafted free agent. So there is a big dropoff from Roaf to Terrell. This should help John Abraham and Shaun Ellis get some things done. Ellis and Abraham flip-flop between the left and right side, so they will each get an equal shot at Terrell . . .

Santana Moss has been cutting a lot this week in practice and has looked good.
