Jets whispers

Even at 5-3, the Jets are still a team longing for more respect.

"We're probably not the most loved 5-3 team in the world," Jets coach Herman Edwards said.

That alone will probably help them understand to keep their focus (against Kansas City). The Jets finally seem to be getting comfortable in their new offensive and defensive systems.

" Obviously, we've improved. We've started to learn each other offensively and defensively. We're more consistent but not as consistent as we want to be."

The Jets defensive continues to improve, but their offense needs work. "We're moving the ball, but we're not finishing it off," said Edwards. Edwards thinks his team's offense took a step back against the Saints. "We move the ball and then turn it over. You can't get any momentum when you do that. When you can score and get momentum, you feel good about yourself and then the defense gets going."

Quotes: "I like our chances," Jets quarterback Vinny Testaverde said. "Sometimes it doesn't look pretty, but we believe in playing to the end."

Players Notes: NT Tom Barndt was waived on Tuesday. He was signed at the beginning of the seasons to help the nose tackle situation, but made very little impact. WR Santana Moss was upgraded from out to questionable this week. His surgical knee continues to improve, and he could play this week in a limited role. The Jets could use his speed in their offense.

DE John Abraham hand injuries have healed sufficiently, and he's played a lot better the last two weeks. He had three sacks against the Saints on Sunday. Abraham was battling hand injuries earlier in the season, and it was hurting his effectiveness. He was named AFC Defensive player of the week for his four sack performance (he was given an extra sack by the NFL this week that had originally been credited to Mo Lewis).

QB Vinny Testaverde continues to play average football. The Jets won the last two games despite him make a minimal contribution.

The Jets would like to see more from their high- priced quarterback. RB LaMont Jordan, coming off a seven-carry, 75- yard game, will have a bigger role in the offense during the second half of the season. He earned it against the Saints.

FS Damien Robinson was fined $20,000 by the league for twisting Aaron Brooks helmet.

RG Randy Thomas is listed as questionable with a high ankle sprain. He won't practice Wednesday, but says he will definitely try to go on Friday. The Chiefs are weak at defensive tackle, so the Jets can get by with J.P. Machado this week if they need to.
