Jets release Jones

Veteran linebacker Marvin Jones was released by the Jets on Wednesday.

Jones will be replaced at middle linebacker by his old Florida State teammate Sam Cowart. Jones was cut for salary cap reasons, and also because the team is looking to get younger and faster at linebacker. After dealing with a myriad of injuries early in his career, Jones was an ironman the last five seasons, starting 80 straight games. During his Jet career, he had eight seasons of 100-plus tackles. Jones doesn't want to retire and will look to sign with another team.
