Jets sign Barrett and Barton

After filling their need for a big receiver on Friday (Justin McCareins), the Jets filled two other needs on Saturday by signing linebacker Eric Barton (five years, $16.25 million) and cornerback David Barrett (six years, $21 million).

Barton, who played for the Oakland Raiders his first four years in the league, will start for the Jets at weakside linebacker. He will take the place of Sam Cowart, who is moving to middle linebacker.

Barton is coming off his best season. He finished with 131 tackles and six passes defensed. He is considered a solid all-around linebacker, who plays well against the run and pass. Barton also has good size (6-2, 245).

Barrett, who spent his first four years with Arizona, might be a little underrated after playing in relative obscurity for the lowly Cardinals. He's a little short (a tad under 5-10), but he runs well (4.47 forty) and is very willing in run support. He had six interceptions and 29 passes defensed during his time with the Cardinals.
