Testaverde released

The Jets released quarterback Vinny Testaverde on Tuesday.<p>

By releasing Testaverde on June 1, the Jets get to prorate the rest of his signing bonus over the next two years. If they had cut him before June 1, the entire bonus would have counted against this year's cap. This will help them sign all their draft picks.

Testaverde won't officially become a free agent until Wednesday. At that point, expect him to begin negotiations with the Dallas Cowboys. According to a source close to Testaverde, the New England Patriots aren't much of an option right now because the quarterback wants a chance to start.

In Dallas, he would have a chance to unseat inconsistent Quincy Carter. With the Patriots, Tom Brady is obviously entrenched as the starter.
